The main concern with this project was poor drainage and buttressing tree roots. In the spring and during heavy rains, flooding would occur in the yard and make it muddy and unusable. The exposed tree roots were also a hardship as they made mowing the lawn difficult. To solve these issues the 3 large trees were removed to increase sunlight and design layout possibilities as well as the installation of a French drain and re-grading of the lawn. All water is now dealt with in-situ and no more flooding occurs.
An exposed aggregate concrete patio was installed under the existing deck for ease of access through the basement walkout, as well as walkways to the side yard and to the new entertaining area.
Random jumbo flagstone steppers lead users into the new fire pit area that is made up of a decorative aggregate patio and dry stack stone benches. Before entering the space you a greeted with a dry stack stone water feature that spills into a hidden basin covered with black crushed granite to create a pond-less effect and provide some white noise to the space.
The existing deck, shed, fence and pergola were sanded down and resurfaced with a new paint scheme. The pergola also received new post columns. The pergola purlins also needed to be reconfigured for the new ShadeFX canopy that helps buffer the elements.
Low maintenance gardens surround the new hardscape to add visual aesthetic and help blend the space into the surrounding backdrop.
