The goal of this project was to maximize as much usable space as possible without interfering with the natural drainage swale within the property.
A composite deck was installed at the back door to create a smooth and welcoming transition from the house to the backyard. Users then enter the entertaining area with patio furniture and a natural gas fireplace. A hot tub was also integrated within the deck and a rough sawn fir and a laser cut corten steel privacy screen buffer the unwanted neighbouring views. The legal guard is created with aluminum rails and glass inserts to maintain garden views while in the hot tub. A custom powder coated aluminum pergola with an acrylic frosted roof was also incorporated into the deck design to help buffer the elements.
Steps lead users from the deck down to the 2% coloured, random swirl concrete dining patio. The space is large enough to accommodate an 8-10 person table, bbq and a patio swing. Another powder coated aluminum pergola was installed over this space and is equipped with a custom shade canopy that helps dapple the light.
Four custom, raised aluminum planters were also installed within the entertaining and dining areas to add some different levels of vegetation and help soften the spaces. On the exterior of the deck, patio and lawn, low maintenance, multi-seasonal gardens were also added for visual aesthetic. Accent landscape lighting is incorporated in the gardens and illuminates a corten steel privacy screen along the back property line.
Lastly a new garden shed was installed in the back corner of the lot on a raised platform to maximize space and maintain drainage. This shed style was chosen as the roofline matches the slope of the pergola roof and seamlessly ties in the whole design.
