The theme for this project was to be a minimalist, contemporary, linear design with a grand scale and had to evoke the same feeling as a resort in Costa Rica, which the clients had previously visited. The new design also had to deal with a severe grade change, all while conforming to the GRCA regulations.
To accomplish this task, a raised fibreglass pool was installed and retained by a rough sawn cedar timber wall, which was engineered with a double set of tiebacks. To create the wanted resort look, half of the pool deck was installed using composite decking. This boardwalk decking also hides the automatic pool cover. The existing boulders and armor stones were reclaimed in the new design to form a new fire pit area and also help with retaining the large woodland garden.
Access into the pool space is established with long inviting steps. Natural Indiana Sandstone material was used for the coping and sits on top of premium-precast walls and steps. The natural stone was then carried throughout the rest of the design and makes up the remaining square cut stone patios.
A new composite deck was installed under the existing second story deck to double as an additional entertaining space. The pool equipment storage room is also located under the deck and was created using the same material as the pool boardwalk. The composite boards are installed horizontally and the door is seamlessly integrated using custom hinges.
The new landscape is wired for lighting, sound and security, all controlled via smartphone. These added features are implemented throughout the low-maintenance, multi-seasonal gardens and complete the requested appearance. The clients are now pleased they can walk out into their own backyard resort.
